Stop & Shop Launches iPhone Checkout

Boston Business Journal, July 7, 2011

by Galen Moore

Are you the kind of person who'd like to get away with cutting in the supermarket checkout line?

Do you have an iPhone?

Stop & Shop announced Thursday it's launching a mobile app that runs on Apple iPhones, which lets shoppers scan goods, bag them, and pay as they browse through the aisles — without queuing up for the cashier.

The app was developed through a partnership with Modiv Media, a venture-backed technology company that, like Stop & Shop, is based in Quincy, Mass. Modiv makes in-store digital media for retailers, and won a Massachusetts Innovation and Technology Exchange (MITX) award this June in the category of "best commerce game changer."

Stop & Shop is launching the program as a pilot in three stores: 65 Newport Ave., Quincy, Mass.; 300 Grove St., Braintree, Mass.; and 129 Samoset St., Plymouth, Mass. The Canton, Mass. company will then "evaluate timing" for a 2012 roll-out to the remainder of Stop & Shop's 390 stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey, according to a news release issued Thursday.

Modiv's venture backers include Ignition Partners, Oak Investment Partners and Seapoint Ventures. The company raised $8 million from the trio of firms in 2008.
